What Is a BIR TIN and How to Verify It

A plain-language guide to the Philippine Tax Identification Number — what it is, who needs one, and how to check yours instantly online.

What Is a TIN?

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique nine-digit number assigned by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) of the Philippines to every registered taxpayer — individuals, businesses, and other entities.

Your TIN is used for all tax transactions in the Philippines: filing income tax returns, paying business taxes, registering a business, opening a bank account, and processing government transactions that require proof of tax registration.

Who Needs a TIN?

The following persons are required by law to register with the BIR and obtain a TIN:

  • Employees (upon first employment)
  • Self-employed individuals and professionals (freelancers, doctors, lawyers, etc.)
  • Business owners, sole proprietors, and partnerships
  • Corporations and other registered entities
  • Estates and trusts
  • Non-resident aliens with income from the Philippines

Under the National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC), it is illegal to have more than one TIN. If you believe you may have duplicate TINs, contact your RDO immediately.

What Is an RDO?

An Revenue District Office (RDO) is the local BIR branch responsible for a taxpayer’s records based on their registered address or place of business. Your RDO is where you file certain returns, register books of accounts, apply for Authority to Print (ATP) receipts, and handle TIN transfers.

Knowing your RDO code is important when transacting with government agencies, banks, and employers who need to verify your tax registration.

How Does TIN Verification Work?

The BIR provides an official TIN verification portal at orus.bir.gov.ph. When you submit your TIN and personal details, the BIR system checks whether the submitted details match their records and returns:

  • RECORD_MATCHED — your TIN and details match BIR records. The RDO code and TIN validity status are returned.
  • No match — one or more details do not match. Double-check your spelling, TIN digits, and birthdate.

About This Tool

TIN Verifier PH is an independent, free-to-use web tool that wraps the BIR’s public verification endpoint. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a product of the BIR.

We built this tool to make TIN verification more accessible — especially for Filipinos who find the BIR website difficult to navigate. The form is mobile-friendly, works on any browser, and requires no account or login.

Privacy note: We do not store, log, or retain any personal information you enter. Your data is sent directly to the BIR service over HTTPS and is not processed on our servers beyond forwarding the request.

How to Find or Recover Your TIN

If you don’t know your TIN, you can find it by:

  • Checking your BIR Certificate of Registration (Form 2303)
  • Looking at your old tax returns or official receipts
  • Contacting your employer’s HR or payroll department
  • Using the BIR TIN Inquiry page
  • Visiting your RDO in person with a valid ID
