How to Get a TIN

Registration steps for employees, freelancers, self-employed professionals, and business owners.

Registration with the BIR is free for individuals getting a TIN for employment. A ₱500 annual registration fee applies when registering a business.

For New Employees

If you are starting your first job, your employer is legally required to register you with the BIR and obtain your TIN. You do not need to do this yourself.

  1. 1

Your employer files BIR Form 1902 on your behalf within 10 days of your start date.

  2. 2

The BIR processes the application and issues your TIN.

  3. 3

Your employer gives you your TIN. Request a TIN card from your RDO if needed.

Documents to prepare (just in case your employer asks): one valid government-issued ID and a completed BIR Form 1902.

For Self-Employed & Freelancers

If you work for yourself — as a freelancer, consultant, doctor, lawyer, or any professional in private practice — you must register on your own.

  1. 1

Fill out BIR Form 1901 (for individuals) or 1903 (for corporations/partnerships).

  2. 2

Go to the RDO that has jurisdiction over your home address or place of business.

  3. 3

Submit the form with valid ID and required supporting documents.

  4. 4

Pay the ₱500 annual registration fee and get your Certificate of Registration (Form 2303).

  5. 5

Register your books of accounts and official receipts/invoices.

Documents typically required:

  • • Accomplished BIR Form 1901
  • • Valid government-issued ID
  • • DTI Certificate (for sole proprietors)
  • • Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) ID (for licensed professionals)
  • • Barangay Certificate

Online Option (eTIN)

The BIR offers an eTIN service for certain taxpayer types. You can apply online at ereg.bir.gov.ph. As of writing, online TIN issuance is available for:

  • New employees (via employer)
  • Individuals with no other source of income
Avoid third-party websites or fixers offering to get a TIN for a fee. BIR registration is free and only done through official BIR channels.

After Getting Your TIN

Once you have your TIN, you can request a physical TIN card from your RDO. Bring:

  • Valid government ID
  • Your TIN number
  • Authorization letter (if claiming on someone else’s behalf)

The TIN card is free and serves as a valid ID in many transactions.
